Welcome. Stay with me for the next few moments. I have a message for you which could well change your life.
I've been a professional writer since the 1970s.
I entered the online world in the 1980s, in the halcyon days of Bulletin Board Systems.
In the early 1990s, I became excited at the potential of the Internet for businesses, and gave many presentations on the theme of the "Age of Creativity".
In those days, audiences looked at me blankly. Internet service providers had yet to create their first Yellow Pages ads. When I told them the Internet would change the world, they thought I was crazy, but were too polite to say so.
Fast forward to 2000, and the emergence of blogging.
Hey, I thought: this is amazing. It's Gutenberg all over again: instant publishing. Many of my writer friends thought I was crazy too. The general line they took was: "You're writing for free! Madness..."
Although I half-believed them, my gut told me blogging would be a game-changer, and so it is. Nowadays the naysayers all have blogs, and businesses are climbing onto the blogging bandwagon too.
This is where you come in...
Businesses need blogs, and bloggers, and they pay for them
If you're looking for writing gigs, you'll have seen that many businesses advertise for bloggers. Unfortunately, the businesses which advertise are all doing so because they're looking for cheap content.
You can do much better.
You can find clients who don't advertise, but who pay well for blogging. Did you know that experienced professional bloggers charge their clients a minimum of $1000 per month, per blog? Consider that if a blogger's working for 20 clients, that's $20,000 a month.
You can blog for businesses too, if you're prepared.
In 2004, I was writing for a series of blogs, and made a great income. My fees, per blog, started at $1,500 per month.
If you've been blogging for a pittance -- $5 a post -- please realize that there is a world of businesses out there which are willing to pay you much more.
However, you need to know HOW to find those businesses, and how to get them to hire you.
Here's the key: you must know how to find the companies which want and need you
Although $1000 a month may seem like a huge sum for a few blog posts each week, you need to look at it from a business's point of view.
Even in these straitened times, $1000 doesn't have much of an impact on a marketing budget, even with smaller companies. A company's marketing budget can be anywhere from one to 20 per cent of total net sales, and even a tiny newspaper ad costs $500.
And once it appears, a newspaper ad may be effective for one day, or three days, but that's it. A blog post can keep working for a company for years -- it's an investment, rather than an expense.
That said, here's a big hint: don't tell businesses you want to blog for them... You need to focus on the benefits of a blog: low cost, high effectiveness.
